Three Pines Studio Announces Upcoming Exhibit, "Kate Marshall: Oil Paintings."

Cross Village, MI. - Three Pines Studio will celebrate its upcoming exhibit featuring oil paintings by Kate Marshall with an opening reception on Saturday, July 19, from 2-7 p.m.  This event is open to the public.

Kate Marhsall has lived in Northern Michigan for over 30 years and finds herself endlessly fascinated with non-peopled areas. Though she's had work on display before, Marshall is excited about her first solo show.  She shares, "All the paintings are new this year and were painted with this show in mind.  I'm continuing to work with vistas that I find compelling."

Marshall welcomes a variety of life experiences.  She spent several years working and teaching in theatre before moving to Northern Michigan where her and her husband have raised three children and founded American Spoon.  Kate is also active politically and was the mayor of Petoskey for a stint.  At the suggestion of a friend, she took a painting class thirteen years ago.  She began with acrylics before moving to oils where she found the colors more vibrant and paint slower to dry.  It is her preferred medium.

Marshall finds inspiration in the ever-changing Northern Michigan landscape.  She finds herself drawn to, "horizons, wide vistas, the edges where land meets water and water meets sky."  A painter through the seasons, she is "particularly drawn to the subtlety of the colors of water and sky in muted light regardless of the season."

Her painting methods are based in what she refers to as "effective memory."  At times, she'll sketch on site and paint later.  Her interest is in what you remember or take away from a place. At the end of the day, "what remains is a record of my response to a place at a particular moment of the day that captivated my attention."

It is Marshall's hope that, "something of what I felt in these places is experienced by those who attend the show."

The show will remain on display at Three Pines Studio from July 19th through July 29th.  The studio is open year-round with the following hours:  May through October, open daily from 11 a.m. - 7 p.m. (closed Wednesdays).  November through April, from 11 a.m - 5 p.m., Friday through Monday.
