Three Pines Studio Announces Upcoming Exhibit, "Lake Effect."

Cross Village, MI. - Three Pines Studio will unveil its upcoming exhibit, "Lake Effect," a collection of local photographs by Vinny Walsh, with an opening reception on Saturday, August 2, from 2-7 p.m.  This event is open to the public.

Vinny Walsh, a native of Cross Village, grew up exploring the shorelines and forests of Northern Michigan.  According to Walsh, "I didn't really get into photography until I traveled outside the Midwest.  It wasn't until later that I began to see things differently, to appreciate it more.  Now, my eyes are always looking for something to photograph."

The term lake effect is defined as: The effect of any lake, especially the Great Lakes, in modifying the weather in nearby areas. Thus, the title of the show refers not only to the effects of the winter weather phenomenon, but also to the impact Lake Michigan has had on Walsh.  He found himself selecting images that "involve the Lake in some way whether the photograph was taken near the lake or whether I was capturing weather changes caused by the lake.  The majority of the images revolve around winter weather."

Despite extensive travels out West, Walsh continues to find himself drawn to the Northern Michigan landscape.  "The area doesn't have the wide expansive views you find out West.  It can be more of a challenge to accurately capture what is beautiful up North."

For Walsh, taking photographs helps to preserve a sense of place, a connection to a particular moment.  He strives to make the familiar feel new.  "These images are different from what you'd normally expect of the area.  I'd like to share my interpretation of the scenery we may take for granted."

The images are sure to spark personal remembrance of some sort.  According to Walsh, one of the reasons he photographs is to, "remember the connection when the image was taken and the feeling I had while making it.  I always remember the time of day, the temperature, the smell of the air.  The photographs allow others to do the same."

The show will remain on display at Three Pines Studio from August 2nd through August 12th.  The studio is open year-round with the following hours:  May through October, open daily from 11 a.m. - 7 p.m. (closed Wednesdays).  November through April, from 11 a.m - 5 p.m., Friday through Monday.
